Content Strategy: A Social Media and Internet Marketing Tip
By Mason Duchatschek
Is everyone telling you that you need to be on Facebook, Linked In, Twitter and other social media sites if you want to market your products and services online? Are they correct?
The answer is yes and no. The answer is “Yes” because people can’t learn about what you offer if they can’t find you online. If your competitors are getting found on the Internet and you aren’t, then you have given them an advantage.
The answer is “No” if you aren’t offering anything unique or valuable on a consistent basis. The only thing worse than doing nothing is doing something embarrassing or damaging to your company or reputation.
When talking about online marketing, email marketing, video marketing and article marketing, establishing a presence on social media marketing sites is a great beginning, but to really stand out, you need to offer valuable ideas, knowledge and insights that establish you as a subject matter expert, that help people solve problems and you have to do it in a fun and/or interesting way.
Just like in the offline world, you have to stand out and you aren’t likely to get ahead if you’re just doing what everyone else is doing. Be yourself. Share your unique perspectives. Tell your stories and the lessons you’ve learned from them.
Content is king. That’s no secret. Want to know where your best content is going to come from? Here are some tips and ideas.
Make a list of some of your biggest and best accomplishments. Consider the things that you are most proud of and they don’t have to be things that others even know about. Go crazy! Make it a long list and don’t limit yourself.
Often you will find that as you reflect upon your biggest achievements, you will recall facing significant roadblocks or seemingly insurmountable obstacles just prior to overcoming them. What were those obstacles? List them. Describe them. Tell others how you overcame them and what you learned.
Authentic, genuine content that people can relate to, understand, and learn from is the kind that will set you apart and if you don’t share the best of what you have to offer, then neither will the people you send it to.
