Social Media Marketing: Rock Star Tribe Building Strategies

I  enjoyed most of my high school years listening to the hard rock bands of the 1980’s.  If I invested a fraction of what I spent on cassette tapes and concert tickets, then it could probably cover a  good portion of my son’s college education.

So whenever “That Metal Show” on VH1 comes on, I look forward to finding out what happened to and what is currently going on with some of my favorite bands.  I watched an episode not long ago where the host was visiting with Stephen Pearcy who is best known as the lead singer of the band Ratt.

In their prime, Ratt could easily fill an arena with tens of thousands of fans on any given night. The host, Eddie Trunk asked
Stephen what projects he was currently working on.  Stephen said that he making new music.  This time around Stephen didn’t seem to be as focused on lasers, pyrotechnics and colossal stage shows as he was on making music his most die hard fans would appreciate.

Here’s what I found interesting.  Stephen uses social media tools and has a tribe of followers and die hard fans.  He engages with them and interacts often.  He shares his ideas and songs in their preliminary form and asks for fans’ insights and input on what they like and why.

Everybody wins.  Stephen creates new music he is proud of and his biggest fans appreciate it.  His fans feel like they are part of his creative process, because they are. He isn’t squandering his time or resources on work that is going to miss his mark.

Now bands like Ratt  are using social media marketing, text marketing, video marketing and tools like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to share opinions, ideas, and other valuable content with fans.

If a lead singer from a rock band that past his prime many years ago can use social media and interaction with his tribe of followers to do more of what he does best and likes to do most, why can’t you?

Who are your fans? Are you reaching out to them?  Are you listening to them when they reach out to you?  Are they part of your product development or market research efforts?

If not, perhaps that’s why you haven’t reached rock star status in your industry. If you are, then keep it up and rock on!
